Technological Depth and Hidden Layers of GABRISNOTE®
The Anatomy of Security Design
Creating a visual work that aims to communicate in a large format requires unquestionable talent and a feel for composition. However, transforming a miniature piece of paper, which easily fits in the palm of your hand, into a complex, layered work of art with strict technological parameters requires absolute mastery and a deep knowledge of printing disciplines. Security design represents a specific field of fine art that does not forgive the slightest hesitation. The thickness of each individual line, the mathematical precision of guilloche networks, color registration, and the material substance of the paper play more than just a decorative role here. In the context of the lifelong GABRISNOTE® concept, these technical elements are an integral part of an artistic language that deepens the illusion of sovereignty and transforms ordinary printed paper into a fascinating collector's artifact.
From Hand Drawing to Security Software and Back Again
If we want to fully understand the technical perfection of Matej Gábriš's current work, we must look at its chronology, which is unprecedented in the Central European region. Early experiments with banknote "graphics" date back to the late 1980s and were also defined by pure manual work—drawing with ink, colored pencils, and the first attempts at linocut, which served as a laboratory for childhood and youth imagination. The outputs served as a basis for a game that had its own rules, and fictional securities played a central role in it. The ideological and later technological shift in his work was brought about by the founding of the Narcis Community in 1993, when the elements of the game were backed by a complex monetary and economic system.
The 1990s were marked by the search for proprietary printing techniques: Matej experimented with hand-engraved plaster and later polymer blocks, using a small press that his grandfather had custom-built for him for the actual printing. This craft-based touch with the material and printing fundamentals laid the foundation for the later transition to digital technologies. His current work represents an effort to encompass the most demanding and latest printing innovations in the field of security printing—the use of specialized software to generate security features, the transition to precise offset printing, but also intaglio printing (steel engraving), and the application of advanced protective features that definitively blur the line between a fictional banknote and a real security document. This is also one of the reasons why his work is valued and sought after by collectors from all over the world, and why security printers from across Europe collaborate with him. And even though he prefers to devote himself to banknotes and securities in any form, his relationship with classical graphic techniques has not cooled down in the slightest. On the contrary—today he repeatedly returns to them, and they often bring him the same joy of creation and opportunities to discover new expressive techniques.
Material Essence: Watermark, Security Fibers and the Haptic Experience
The artistic experience of fictional banknotes (fantasy notes) does not begin only with visual perception, but primarily through touch. For the illusion of a currency note to be perfect, the fundamental building block must be a material of the highest quality. Therefore, since 2012, GABRISNOTE® have been printed exclusively on special security paper, which fundamentally differs from ordinary papers in its structure and properties. First and foremost, its base consists mainly of cotton, not just paper pulp. The second significant difference is that the paper contains a real, structural watermark, which is pressed into the paper during its actual production in the paper machine, giving the "banknote" a characteristic haptic sensation and a typical "crisp" sound when touched. Another deep technological layer consists of colored security fibers, which are randomly embedded directly into the paper mass. These microscopic elements are visible to the naked eye, but their actual presence becomes proof of authenticity and respect for traditional security craftsmanship, elevating the graphic work to a unique collector's item.

When we dive deeper into the visual structure of GABRISNOTE®, we discover a microscopic world that is almost invisible to the casual observer. The background architecture of each banknote is formed by complex guilloche networks—intertwined geometric lines generated using complex mathematical formulas, which create harmonious ornamental structures and have simultaneously served as the primary protection for securities since the late 17th century. The real secret, however, is revealed only under a strong collector's magnifying glass, where the viewer discovers the presence of microtexts. These lines, invisible to the naked eye, replace standard lines and encode hidden historical data, messages, quotes, or excerpts that are closely related to the central theme of the work and deepen its intellectual narrative. However, the layering does not end here. The use of UV-reflective printing opens up a third, mysterious dimension of the work. Only under the wavelength of a UV lamp do hidden symbols, fluorescent colors, and complementary graphic elements light up on the banknote, remaining hidden under normal daylight, which provides the viewer with a fascinating experience of gradually uncovering an artistic secret.
Collector Exclusivity and the Code of Limited Editions in the Era of Fantasy Notes
The combination of such high technological demands with a distinct artistic vision makes the GABRISNOTE® concept a phenomenon of ever-increasing value. In the global community of fantasy banknote collectors, a strict code of exclusivity applies, which we strictly adhere to. Each individual motif is issued in strictly limited and low print runs, and once they are sold out, the matrices are definitively closed, and the given edition will never be reprinted in an identical form. The GABRISNOTE® trademark, combined with uncompromising printing execution, thus guarantees that the owner holds not just an ordinary souvenir, but truly concentrated printing craftsmanship and an artistic concept, which together transform the fictional value of a miniature piece of art into lasting, tangible wealth backed by the author's lifelong passion and admiration for security printing.
