Price

€15.00

Saint Lucy (Latin: lux, light) is one of the most visually striking figures associated with the winter season. Her feast day, celebrated on 13 December, precedes the winter solstice and, in northern Europe, marks a celebration of light at the time of deepest darkness.

Lucia was originally from Syracuse in Sicily and died a martyr’s death. Her symbol is the eyes. She has become a symbol of hope and protection against evil forces – not only amongst Christians and in the Orthodox Church, but also amongst Protestants. Although the tradition has spread throughout Europe, it has become most visually rich in the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway), where she is depicted as a girl in a white robe wearing a crown of candles on her head.

These candles are a motif symbolising the struggle against darkness and the anticipation of Christmas. And they glow beautifully under UV light...
