Gabrisnote® 1 Likestilling 2025

"Likestilling" (gender equality) means that women and men in Norway have equal rights and opportunities in all significant areas of life. In the 19th century, an organised movement emerged that campaigned for gender equality. Key issues included women’s right to vote, women’s access to school education and higher education, and women’s right to paid work. Gina Krog played a key role in this work. In 1913, women were granted the same right as men to vote and stand for election. In 1978, the Office for Gender Equality was established in Norway, the first body of its kind in the world. The ‘1 likestilling’ banknote celebrates the struggle for equality, pays tribute to these efforts and links the theme to the ‘banknote’ by highlighting that, just like a banknote, ‘likestilling’ is a value.
